Chkahichdahk is the enormous ship in Lilliths Brood aka Xenogenesis by Octavia E Butler. It is actually a female plant-like organism that is a chimera of the Oankali and many other alien genes.
Orbiting the Earth out beyond the Moon, its resilient skin feeds off solar radiation. This is energy is used to produce and recycle nutrients for the inhabitants of this massive self-contained environment. Ships like Chkahichdahk are how Oankali travel space and spread their genes.

All three books are an exploration of different forms of reproduction, alien intervention, colonialism and survival.
The series is rich in character interaction and important questions about autonomy and identity. This is probably why the series has previously not been picked up for a screen conversion. A TV series is possibly in the works with Victoria Mahoney & Ava DuVernay being associated with the directors chair.
